How to enjoy the summer when you’re trapped in the office

It looks like summer has finally arrived and just your luck, you’re stuck in the office, staring out of the window thinking about all the fun you could be having if only you didn’t have to work.

Well, there’s nothing we can do about you having to work, but as a leading office fit out company we have a fair bit of experience when it comes to making people comfortable at work.

We’ve put together some tips that will help you to enjoy the summer even though you might have to spend much of your day in an office environment.

Make fruit infused water – When we think of summer, we think of fresh fruit and cocktails! It’s easy to make some ‘safe for work’ fruity drinks, just check out buzzfeed’s recipes, and bring summer time inside.

Change your playlist – Get rid of those moody ballads for your commute or work playlist and switch them up to more upbeat summery tunes. Whether you’re listening to ‘Summer Madness’ or the ‘Macarena’, put together something which sings SUMMER to you.

Spruce up your desk – It’s all about colour. Colours can help your productivity and moods so make sure you are surrounded by things which make you feel bright and happy – blue skies and summer beaches work for us. It could be as simple as your desktop background.

Treat yourself – Taking a break from your workspace has proven to improve productivity. We’ve heard of businesses taking some time on a Friday afternoon to supply the office with ice lollies as a cool treat to set everyone up for the afternoon.

Change your wardrobe – This seems obvious but nothing improves your mood like switching up your outfits. Switch out your business suits for short-sleeved lightweight shirts or summer dresses (depending on your preference). Make sure you check your employer’s dress code before turning up in flip flops though.

Lunching outside – Make sure you get outside at some point. Swap out your winter soups for light salads and wraps, and get out into the sunshine for a portion of the day. A little fresh air and some Vitamin D can leave you feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your afternoon workload.

Buy a plant – We always recommend this. Bringing nature into the office is great for O2 levels and a little greenery in the office will help to lift your mood.

Summer friendly schedule – Many employers will allow you to start earlier in order to leave earlier and enjoy the early evening sunshine. Check with your employer to see if this is something they entertain and make sure you take advantage of it.

So, there you go just a few ideas that might help you to survive the summer at work. If you are spending time in the sunshine remember to wear protection and make sure you are well hydrated. If you are commuting on the tube ensure you always have a bottle of water with you.
